There is a critical gap in board member education and exposure. It's a common misconception that board members inherently possess all necessary knowledge and skills for their roles. However, their effectiveness hinges on continuous learning. Initially, they must understand the organization's mission and operations. Next, they require clear guidance on their roles and responsibilities as board members. Finally, they need context-specific training on how they can contribute effectively. To address this, we advocate for expert-led sessions and internal mentoring programs, utilizing the experience of outgoing members for guidance. This approach ensures board members are not just participants but active contributors to organizational success.
